Sunnybank Triumph in Brisbane Rugby GF
A spiteful Brisbane Rugby Grand Final on Sunday, 25 September 2011, at Ballymore saw Sunnybank defeat Brothers 35-24. Played in glorious spring sunshine at the traditional home of Brisbane rugby, Ballymore, the Dragons side, studded with 7 Reds squad members and Melbourne Rebels fullback/halfback Richard Kingi, overcame a late charge by Brothers to win the Hospital Cup, which was first contested in 1899.
Both teams had defeated minor premiers Queensland University to qualify for the Grand Final. Sunnybank dominated a feisty first half to go to the sheds up 17-5 before the Brethren made a late charge in the second half to narrow the margin 24-29, before Reds utility Ben Lucas, after a 10 minute stint in the sin-bin in the first half, slotted two penalty goals to move the Dragons to the winning score 35-24. Definitely not as easy as their last Grand Final appearance in 2007 where they thrashed the Gold Coast Breakers 85-19.
